The crisp smell in the air when you make apple pie it’s truly one of my favorite things, and when I make apple pie it’s with my dad. My dad and I have made this recipe for years now and we have mastered our Apple Pie, I have many memories with this dish. The dish is made with fresh sliced apples, the smell is a mixture of cinnamon and sweet cooked apples. This is a simple dish that doesn’t take that long to make and it will be one I carry on with me.  This dish will hold significance with me for the rest of my life because it was a dish I spent time making with my dad, I grew up being very close with both of my parents but my dad and I always had that close father-daughter relationship. I always looked up to my dad and how strong he was I strived to be like him, he lost his dad at a very young age and I never wanted to take anything for granted, and this recipe this memory of the Apple Pie is something I can hold onto forever and it is such a simple thing to remember and be able to share with others.

The crisp smell in the air when you make apple pie it’s truly one of my favorite things, and when I make apple pie it’s with my dad. My dad and I have made this recipe for years now and we have mastered our Apple Pie, I have many memories with this dish. This is a simple dish that doesn’t take that long to make and it will be one I carry on with me.  This dish will hold significance with me for the rest of my life because it was a dish I spent time making with my dad, I grew up being very close with both of my parents but my dad and I always had that close father-daughter relationship.      When talking with my dad, I asked him “Can you explain your relationship with the dish- what does it mean to you?” Quite simply he said “the dish is the discussion, the apple pie is just the conversation piece. It’s really what goes into making the pie which is my favorite. I love to cook and love to back though it doesn’t happen enough. What makes this dish so incredible is the time spent with my daughter, Grace, while making the pie.” I couldn’t relate to this and agree more this is all this dish is doing is making me and my family closer.  Anytime we get to do anything together, the outcome is irrelevant. Trust me, there have been failures with the dish’s execution, but the experience is never a failure.” From hearing my dads answers it was basically like what I had said making the apple pie and getting to eat it, is the good part but making it and spending time with my dad is the main part.

Asking, why he thought I liked the dish was a bit of a funny question. But, my dad did have a good answer. “I think Grace likes the dish for many of the same reasons I do. We have always valued time spent together, regardless of what we are doing. So making this dessert that we can all enjoy as a family would be why Grace likes the dish.” Said my dad. We both like this dish because as a family it means we are together we value the time spent together, we don’t take anything for granted.

The apple pie is a good dessert to have at anytime really it’s always fitting but it is better in the fall when you can pick your own fresh apples. I would agree with my dad when he said “ The Apple Pie is one of his favorite meals. It is best when topped with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream melting over the crips apples.”  The warmness of the apples when you slice a  piece of the apple pie and than you top it with the cold scoop of vanilla ice cream that is my favorite and definitely my dad’s favorite too. When we make our apple pie we usually get our apples from our local store or we pick  them fresh at Giles Family Farm, which is located in Alfred Maine. I believe this is also both of our favorite meals because it is one we can share with each other and our family, I love when we can make it for my mom when shes had a long day at work and we can just surprise her with a nice dinner and our apple pie.

Lastly, I had to come up with my own question and that was what was my dad’s favorite memory of the dish? He then responded and I knew that was the response I was going to get. “ On one of our occasions of baking the Apple Pie, my wife was so impressed with the taste and quality of the pue, from the filling, to the spices, and culminating with the flakiest of crusts. She demanded to see the box that it must of came out of. The dirty dishes alone in the kitchen was not enough evidence that it was homemade. We were instructed to make another pie, which we graciously did, and low and behold, a twin perfect pie was born.”  It was a story that I knew was coming and it is one we hold onto forever. It is always a story that comes up when my dad and I talk about our Apple Pies, and it is one we will all share with others and family.

I love this dish because it is a memory I can have with this dish and my dad, and it is so delicious. The dish itself is the minor part of this essay the bigger picture is the fact that I have this one food that I can connect so many feelings with. Feelings and moments i’ll keep with me forever. Baking this Apple Pie is a simple thing that my father and I can make and it is time that I get to spend with him, I am not a big cooker or baker but when I get to make this Apple Pie it is one I look forward too, being away from home is making me so excited to go home soon and then get to make this Apple Pie with him. This all makes me think of what it would be like if I didn’t have this memory with him or with this food.
