“The End of Food” had a lot of points and quotes, it was a very interesting article to read. To think that someone isn’t eating real food and just the parts of the food you need are crazy. One of the points I wanted to talk about was on page 6, the first two paragraphs. Rhinehart has two quotes that catch my eye; “Very inefficient factories”, and “Agriculture’s culture one of the most dangerous and dirty jobs out there, and it’s traditionally done by the underclass.” I never really thought about how dirty these jobs are until Rhinehart used this quote and when he talks about inefficient factories it made me stop and think. According to his statistics, 15% of livestock causes all greenhouse-gas emissions.
In the 3rd paragraph, it got me to laugh a little, Rhinehart takes someone on a tour of the Soylent headquarters. When he gets to the fridge he says “The college-student fridge of the future.” He talks about what is in the fridge and then he said how there was a bag of carrots in there as well as beer and soylent. The carrots were something the roommate had bought but he referred to them as a “fun snack” which I found comical because they are so used to drinking soylent that they see carrots as a snack.
Page 7, Rhinehart has changed his home so that it can be used for Soylent, and he talks about how he lives. When his clothes get smelly he than takes them off and puts them in the freezer to get rid of the odor they had on them, and he will just wear a towel around. That part kind of shocked me in a gross way but it also kind of made me think a different way. He is using his resources differently than I would’ve ever thought. But he also just wears them for a few weeks than he donates them. This article was very interesting and reading it, I learned a lot about how differently Rhinehart thought about things.
